At Blueback, our commitment to innovation and improving healthcare is demonstrated by the tangible benefits we bring to patients (and their practitioners!).
Clinical trial: a step forward in low back pain rehabilitation thanks to Blueback Physio
Our primary objective in this clinical trial was to measure the reduction in the time taken to learn to master voluntary recruitment of the transverse abdominis (TrA) and return to independence in patients with chronic low back pain, using the Blueback Physio. The only device that allows real-time visualization of TrA contraction. And guess what… it made a difference in the lives of our participants!

The population assessed and the protocol carried out
The clinical trial included a population of 41 patients, including 26 women and 15 men, all of whom had suffered from chronic low back pain for an average of three years. These participants formed the core of our study, contributing their experiences and hopes to contribute to improving healthcare.
Among the participants, 50% were on concurrent medication, highlighting the magnitude of the challenge posed by chronic low back pain.
Patients were treated for 25 30-minute sessions, during which they received multidisciplinary care. This holistic approach helped maximize results and optimize the beneficial effects of Blueback Physio.
To conduct the clinical trial, participants were divided into two distinct groups: the Test group and the Control group. The Test group received visual biofeedback from the Blueback Physio, allowing them to visualize the contraction of the transverse abdominal muscle in real time. On the other hand, the Control group underwent the same tests, but in blind mode, without access to visual feedback – with manual biofeedback.
More than positive results!
The results obtained at the end of the clinical trial leave no doubt about the effectiveness of Blueback Physio in the treatment of lower back pain. We have outlined the key points that emerged from this study and which illustrate the positive impact of our medical device:
A clear success: Using Blueback Physio has significantly reduced the number of failures in mastering TrA autonomy. The figures speak for themselves: while 70% of patients in the control group did not achieve these goals, this percentage dropped to just 30% among patients who received biofeedback.
Improved efficiency : Participants using the Blueback Physio demonstrated a significant improvement in the control of voluntary TrA recruitment (and return to autonomy). Indeed, the results show that the quality of deep muscle contraction was optimized thanks to the device!
A significant time saving : Learning to master and control TrA contraction independently was accelerated with the use of biofeedback. On average, participants were able to achieve these goals in three fewer sessions than the other group.
A decrease in pain perception: Pain scores measured at the start of treatment were high, but thanks to the use of Blueback Physio, a significant decrease in pain perception was observed. This positive finding is an important step towards patient well-being and improving their quality of life.

And after...
The results of our clinical trial confirm the importance of the transverse abdominis muscle in rehabilitation and pave the way for new, innovative approaches. These encouraging results were made possible thanks to Deep-EMG® technology , which is also integrated into our brand-new product, Inner UP - probe-free pelvic floor biofeedback (electrodes placed on the abdomen). Further clinical trials are currently underway.
We warmly thank all the participants and healthcare professionals who contributed to this clinical trial, which is just the beginning for Blueback.
